about

Peacock is the second track off Varja Ponjo's upcoming debut album, planned for 2021. It shares that same minimalistic soundscape of the previous single We Hold In We Hunger but the comparison ends there. This is a hymn-like tune/spoken word poem, brought forth by the sole accompaniment of a piano and a broken pump organ.

”I started writing it during a time when emotions ran about as dark for me personally as is the feeling of the world in general right now, this mad year 2020. Peacock is a song about a weak person - a knocked-out person really – maundering, looking for her path and imagining a different life”, Johnson explains the new single. “It’s her desperate attempt to brighten things up with peacock feathers”.

The second verse about the house was improvised during the single take, as this recorded version is an excerpt of a long improvisation she did in order to finish the song she had begun writing a couple of years ago, The old pump organ was lent out by the residents of a house in the woods nearby the Brottby studio where Thella Johnson and Petter Bergander, who co-produced the track, live and work.

lyrics

This is a song about wanting
What you can't get
Getting what you don't want

You sit
On your judgement
Making us wait
Dancing around the cobwebs
Hell keeps
'Til one Tuesday
A fortune teller
Dancing for all
But myself

And maybe
It's better
To invest in
Catching a song
In this life
Instead of fighting for
All those impossible things

And how long
Is the way
And how do
We pray
If we don't just jump out

Now I want to buy
A peacock
Something to help glowing

Like a new house
Filled with the energy
Of new people
New inhabitants
That make love
Enter again

The house
Is always dead
'Cause it's only filled
With the energies that were
Of the people
Living for generations
In that house

And how long
Is the way
And how do
We pray
If we're not believers
But need so much anyway

Now I want to buy
A peacock
Something to help glowing

And how long
Is the way
And how do
We pray
If we're not believers
But need so much anyway

Now I want to buy
A peacock
Something to help glowing
